The Sandy Bay lifeguards managed to spend some time with the local ambulance service over the summer.
We had the opportunity to be a third person in an ambulance, observing and assisting the paramedic and technician over a shift.
The shift I helped out on was 20.00 hours Friday to the following morning! A long, hard shift, that goes with a hard job.
I learnt a lot from spending time with the Paramedic and Technican. I was very lucky; they spent time explaining things to me, testing my practical skills and they had a real passion for the job they do.
I think going out for a shift in the ambulance real helped the first aid skills that I use on the beach. To any lifeguards reading this, its something I defiantly recommend doing and worth trying to sort out with your local ambulance service.
Below is a pictures of the Ambulance I spend my shift onboard at Exmouth Seafront.
