The youth of today!

October 16, 2009

I receieved a letter today letting me know about the latest RNLI campaign.

A great video showing the work of the youth of today who are part of the RNLI.

The RNLI are going to be setting challenges for young people over the next few months. The aim of these will be to raise money! Eventually raising enough to buy a Lifeboat.

Check out more information on the youtube campaign here.

First Aid for Lifeguards

October 5, 2009

At the start of this season each RNLI Lifeguard undertook the RNLI First Aid For Lifeguards course. This is a very similar course to the RNLI First Aid For Lifeboats. The course was written and created by the RNLI clinical lead Paul Savage.

Lifeguards do not often have to deal with large groups of casualties at the same time; it is probably more common for Lifeboat crews to come across multiple casualties. When dealing with multiple casualties we are taught to categorise patients P1, P2, P3 and P4. P1 needs treatment first and P3 last. P4 was the category that was given to those obviously dead.

Over on http://lifeboatscrapbook.blogspot.com/ one of the latest posts was about a change in the way we categorise casualties. Previously we were taught to use the P1, P2, P3, P4 categories but it seems that P4 has recently been changed to “dead” in order that the RNLI fits in with other organisations. Paul Savage has posted some info about the changes on http://lifeboatscrapbook.blogspot.com/.

We all hope that we never come across anyone that is dead but it is a really possibility in work on the beach and out at sea and something that we all have to be prepared for.

Exmouth Lifeboat Open Day

August 12, 2009

At the end of August it is Exmouth Lifeboat Open Day. This is a chance for supporters of the RNLI to come and have a look and ask questions about the two Lifeboats and the Lifeguards in Exmouth. There is likely to be a few demonstrations from us and possibly the Lifeboats (subject everyone not being called out or needed in an emergency!)

Keep an eye on http://www.exmouth-lifeboat.org.uk/events.htm for latest information about Exmouth Lifeboat events.

The Sun is Shining!

August 7, 2009

At last is seems summer has arrived! Yesterday was a hot busy day on the beach. We estimated at the busiest time had up to 3000 people on Exmouth beach with over 200 in the water between the red and yellow flags.

The four Lifeguards on Exmouth beach were kept busy yesterday with a variety of minor incidents, including first aids, lost children and the odd inflatable that drifted a little too far out. Thankfully no major rescues or first aids. Lots of PA announcements, patrols between the flags, water patrols on boards and on the RWC and beach patrols all helped to keep people safe and prevent anyone from getting in to difficulty.

It seems that most of the Lifeguard units in the South West have been busy this week. A little bit of sunshine and some big Atlantic swells combined with big spring tides has meant all the RNLI Lifeguards around the coast have been working very hard. Check out the RNLI press release listing just a few of the rescues that took place a few days ago.

You may notice if you visit a Lifeguarded beach that the red and yellow flags (that you should swim and paddle between) may move. The Lifeguards are constantly observing the conditions and will move the flags to keep them in the safest area. It is important that if you are in the water and you see the flags being moved head across the beach to where the new zone has been set up.
